Episode 6 is OUT!!! This episode on generational Episode 6 is OUT!!!

This episode on generational differences towards social media was an ABSOLUTE BEAST to edit and produce!! Plus, it was a first for me on several levels: a) My daughter, Natalia-Paloma, co-hosts this episode with me b) It was the first time I did a multiple-person interview and c) It's the first time I can say I'm really proud of my work.

Anyone who knows me personally will find that last statement shocking as I am loath to ever use the word "proud' in relation to myself.

I hadn't expected the tone of this discussion to be so serious but there are some touching, light-hearted moments that got us all laughing.

Warning! It's a long episode but I hope you'll find the content worth it. I cannot wait for you to listen to it!!

HUGE thanks to all my amazing, articulate, engaging guests. I am absolutely bursting with excitement at my joy in releasing this episode.

Podcast Episode Teaser! Ahead of releasing my nex Podcast Episode Teaser!

Ahead of releasing my next podcast episode on Generational Differences Toward Social Media, I’d like to share a few tidbits I learned while interviewing 5 women across 5 generations here in Europe:

- How TikTok can be an important platform… for business and education;
- That there is ONE Facebook feature that attracts Teens & 20 somethings to its platform;
- About the type of person that is most likely to get unfollowed or muted on social media.

Also you'll hear about generational steretypes on social media, which age groups have the highest screen times and whether or not “Karen” has made it to this side of the Atlantic.

P.s. this is a snapshot of what editing audio tracks looks like

Community, Connection & Rebellion When you take i Community, Connection & Rebellion

When you take in the events of tectonic-shift magnitude that we have collectively witnessed in the first 2 months of 2021 alone -- prolonged pandemic lockdowns, the UK's divorce from Europe, the siege of the American capitol by its own citizens and this past week's devastating capitulation of the power grid of American's most energy-rich state, it can all feel overwhelmingly defeating.

Especially when you consider that each of these events can be leveraged as potential wedges to drive us further apart: to comply with lockdowns or not; to hail or to regret Brexit; to believe the American elections to be fair or fraudulent; to tout free, unregulated markets or to encourage government intervention.

But at some point, can we all agree that the continuous "drawing of lines in the sand" has become rather tiresome?
Rather than deepening our divisions and pointing accusingly at "other", can we conscientiously rebel...for connection and community?

I've reached out to people from my past this week to go against the grain of global negativity-- just to say hello. Just to say, "We may not be in touch, but please know I think about you. And I hope you're well."

And you know what? Entirely independent of that outreach, I've heard from someone else from my past who wrote to say, "Hey! Just wanted to say hello, check in, ask how you're doing. I hope you're well!”

It's reconnection towards a new sense of community in what can feel like a broken world. But it's a start. And it absolutely makes a difference.

What other suggestions do you have to “rebel with kindness” against the world’s negativity?

The Accidental Singer I’ve been asked to share The Accidental Singer

I’ve been asked to share this post from my private social media here too. We discovered this accidental artist’s penchant for doing back-up vocals while my daughter was rehearsing. Introducing the newest musician in the family, Rougie!!

Kindness Karma Spotlight: Cindy Westerfield 💖 Kindness Karma Spotlight: Cindy Westerfield 💖

Anyone who's ever had a conversation with me about friendship will eventually hear about "my people". We're so fiercely protective of each other and our friendship, that about 7 yrs ago, someone nicknamed us "Fort Knox". This is Cindy, one of The Fort and one of my closest friends of all time.

Physically, Cindy might be the most powerful woman I know. She's run a few marathons (Boston, NY) just for the hell of it. We've even joked that Cindy could do a marathon in sequins and stilettos if she wanted to. When we could go out (pre-Pandemic), Cindy was the first one dancing on the tables and the last one off the dance floor. We have danced and partied and cried and laughed together across many lands and seas.

But let me tell you about what the world doesn't know about my dear friend...

Once upon a time when I couldn't drive because my foot was out of commission and my kids were little, Cindy came over from America to help me out. She did the groceries, drove my kids to school, made my family dinner and even did homework hour.  When my boys had Bar Mitzvahs, Cindy woke me at 7 am (in spite of arriving very late the night before) to finish the to-do list. She's been at my side countless times - in sickness & in health through thick & thin. So when we're together and she throws a dress at my head and says "Here! Iron this for me!", I love it SO much that we have that kind of relationship and that she's the kind of friend who can boss me around. We take each other’s shit. And we give back all our love. Her kindness is deep and unparalleled.

So yes, I'm bragging shamelessly here. Cindy is for me... GOLD.

Shunning "Shoulds"  When you have no "proper" tr Shunning "Shoulds"

When you have no "proper" training in something that interests you, you're not defined by rules or parameters or limits. It's incredibly freeing actually. This week, I've been working on more background music for the podcast and since I have NO idea how to formally compose or annotate music, it's fair to say that my composing process is a little "untidy". I sing all kinds of tunes into my phone's voice memo app,  copy the melodies on the piano and then sketch out which ones I like best in my handy-dandy notebook. I showed my mother (also a pianist)  what my musical "score" looks like and she couldn't stop laughing. So I thought I'd share the score and the new piece here too. All this to say that it doesn't matter how you get there. Even composing music has taught me that all that matters is the willingness to move forward in whichever way works best for you. Who cares how it "should" be done. I'm giving up the idea of "limits". On anything.

World Read Aloud Day There are so many blessings World Read Aloud Day

There are so many blessings and curses about being an expat. The hardest part for me are the goodbyes- they make you almost not want to engage in the hellos when new people arrive. So when someone from your past reaches out and brings you into their world, it rattles all your curmudgeonly notions about hellos & goodbyes and just makes you smile.

A very dear friend of mine (@carissamaddox ) from this life in England is now Regional Director of Schools in Indianapolis. For World Read Aloud Day, she asked if I would read aloud and share a bit about my writing journey to 7th Graders at St. Philip Neri in Indianapolis.

I told them that I was so nervous because often when we think of “writers”, we think of celebrated novelists or best-selling authors – neither of which is me!

But I told them I DO qualify by the mere fact that I love to write.

More than 24 hours have passed since my presentation on Shel Silverstein but I’m still giddy from my time with the kids. Thank you @stphilipindy for having me. Am so touched and honoured that you invited me!!!

Here’s a clip of my talk (plus some stills) where I tell the kids what I would say to my 7th grade self…
